A penny-serial romance by James Malcolm Rymer, issued in weekly numbers by Edward Lloyd in London in 1848 for cheap mass readership. The wood engravings stage melodrama in eighteenth-century dress — abductions, duels, courtroom and prison scenes, night interiors lit by a single candle — and several open chapters as vignettes wreathed in curling foliage, column shafts and Gothic arches that break the text column and can be lifted as page ornaments.
