Carl Mönckeberg's Geschichte der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg, a civic history of the city published in Hamburg in 1885 for local readers. The plates are wood-engraved horizontal headbands in Renaissance revival style: dense acanthus scrollwork, winged grotesques, masks and swans flanked by half-figure caryatids, each set in a beaded frame with corner spandrels, usable as rules, banners, and repeatable border units.
