Moreton: or, the Doomed House. A romance
An anonymous gothic romance issued in London in 1847, printed in cheap weekly numbers for a general reading public and illustrated with small wood engravings set directly into the double-column text. The cuts show cloaked and plumed figures swearing oaths, toasting by candlelight, kneeling or fleeing, with heavy black shadow and sparse interiors, useful as vignettes, marginal spot art, and melodramatic gesture reference.
