An abridged school edition of John Lothrop Motley's history of the Dutch Republic, condensed and annotated by William Elliot Griffis and published by Harper & Brothers in 1898 for American students. The fifty plates are engraved and lithographed portraits of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Netherlandish and Spanish figures, mostly bust-length in oval frames set inside ruled rectangles, with names lettered in small capitals beneath.
