A topographical survey of the Berry region and diocese of Bourges written by Nicolas de Nicolay in the sixteenth century and printed in France in 1883 from the Paris manuscript, edited by A. Aupetit for antiquarians and local historians. The ornament revives Renaissance grotesque: bearded mascarons, winged putti holding strapwork cartouches, bead swags and acanthus tailpieces, drawn in fine hatched line on blank ground and easy to isolate as vignettes.
