Les Environs de Paris, histoire, monuments, paysages ... Par l'élite de la littérature contemporaine (L. Gozlan, J. Janin, Viollet-Leduc, etc.) ... 200 dessins. [Edited by J. E. C. N
An illustrated topographical anthology of the districts around Paris, with essays by Léon Gozlan, Jules Janin, Viollet-le-Duc and others under Charles Nodier's editorship, published in Paris in 1855 for a middle-class readership of armchair travellers. Wood engravings by several hands mix castle and village views with costumed figure scenes and decorative chapter headings that combine a distant landscape, a foreground vignette and a text panel in one block, useful for period dress, framing devices and page ornament.
