Max Nordau's Vom Kreml zur Alhambra (1880), a volume of German cultural studies and travel essays on Europe from Moscow to Andalusia, aimed at educated general readers. The plates here are small pen-drawn chapter initials and vignettes in which grotesque beasts — boar-like and bat-winged dragon heads — twist through acanthus scrolls against stippled dotted grounds, useful as drop caps, spot ornaments and monochrome line motifs.
