The History of the French Revolution, 1789 to 1795; or a country without a God

NORTHROP, Henry H. · 1890 · Franklin Publishing Co. · 130 pictures

A popular illustrated history of the French Revolution written by Henry H. Northrop and issued by the Franklin Publishing Co. in 1890, aimed at American general readers and sold on its moral framing of France as "a country without a God." The 130 plates are tinted wood engravings after paintings: massed crowds on bridges and scaffolds, troops fording the Loire, mobs looting a country house, packed tribunal interiors, all with small-capital captions and wide skies of engraved cloud that give designers ready-made backgrounds and silhouetted figure groups.
