Stackpool Edward O'Dell's novel Merciful or Merciless, issued in London by T. Fisher Unwin in 1886 for the general circulating-library readership. The forty plates are decorated chapter initials: outline-engraved capitals set in ruled squares, filled with acanthus scrolls, daisies, tulips and fruit-filled baskets, offering designers a near-complete alphabet of line-only ornamental letters suited to clean reproduction at small sizes.
