Old English ballads. A collection of favourite ballads of the olden time, etc
An 1888 London anthology of traditional English ballads, reprinted for Victorian family reading with full-page wood-engraved plates and captions quoting the verse. The plates stage medieval and yeoman scenes outdoors and in vaulted interiors: a bearded baron with a kneeling woman, an armoured rider on a heavy horse among reeds, a church wedding interrupted, a tavern group around a table with jugs and a dog, useful for figure groupings, costume and hatching textures.
