On and off Duty, being leaves from an officer's notebook. ... With illustrations, etc
A British army officer's travel notebook by Samuel Pasfield Oliver, published in London by W. H. Allen & Co. in 1881 and drawn from postings and journeys in Madagascar, Mauritius and other colonial stations. The 38 plates are wood-engraved landscapes printed sideways on the page — palm avenues, river gorges, thatched villages and the Pouce Mountain seen past a cemetery wall — with fine hatched skies, dark foliage masses and small figures for scale, plus engraved caption lines and "to face p." folio notes usable as period typographic detail.
