Pascarel. Only a story. By Ouida
A three-volume Victorian novel of wandering players in Italy, written by Ouida (Maria Louise Ramé) and issued in London in 1873 for the circulating-library reading public. The plates are wood-engraved horizontal panels used as chapter headings: winged grotesques and acanthus scrolls flanking a cross-bearing shield, and military trophies of drum, flagstaff and spears bedded in leaves, all usable as rules, banners or repeating borders.
