A three-volume Italian romance by Ouida, the pen name of Maria Louise Ramé, issued in London in 1873 for the circulating-library reader. The plates are horizontal wood-engraved panels printed white-on-dark: winged griffins flanking a quartered shield, swallows among roses and lilies, a side drum tangled in foliage — ready-made chapter headpieces, rules and banner strips.
