A 19th-century reissue, edited by the Edinburgh printseller Hugh Paton in 1877, of John Kay's etched portraits and caricatures of Edinburgh citizens, magistrates, professors and street characters made between the 1780s and 1820s, each plate paired with a biographical sketch for local readers and collectors. Most plates are single full-length figures in profile on a bare ground line, drawn in fine etched hatching with heavy black coats, tricorne hats, buckled shoes and canes, plus oval bust vignettes, giving designers cut-out silhouette figures and period costume detail.
