Jacob Harris Patton's single-volume history of the United States from first European contact to 1876, issued in London by Sonnenschein & Co. in 1887 for general readers and school use. The plates are oval-vignetted wood-engraved portraits of statesmen, scientists and writers—Calhoun, Agassiz, Seward among them—each set in a ruled rectangle with a facsimile autograph below, useful for head-and-shoulders portrait stock, engraved shading textures and specimen signatures.
