Headlong Hall, and Nightmare Abbey ... With an introduction by George Saintsbury
An 1896 reissue of Thomas Love Peacock's satirical novels Headlong Hall and Nightmare Abbey, introduced by George Saintsbury and illustrated by F. H. Townsend for late-Victorian readers of reprinted classics. The forty plates are pen-and-ink line drawings of Regency figures in tailcoats, breeches and high-waisted gowns arguing in libraries, parlours and by fireplaces, with quoted captions beneath; useful for hatched shadow, striped upholstery, sparse room settings and expressive standing-and-seated figure pairs.
