The misfortunes of Elphin, and Rhododaphne ... With an introduction by George Saintsbury
A one-volume 1897 London reissue of Thomas Love Peacock's Welsh satire The Misfortunes of Elphin and his verse romance Rhododaphne, introduced by George Saintsbury and illustrated by Frederick Henry Townsend for late-Victorian literary readers. The forty plates are captioned pen-and-ink drawings of robed and tunicked figures meeting among trees, shrines and hedgerows, drawn with dense cross-hatched foliage against bare paper, useful for line-art figure groups, woodland texture and hand-set italic captions.
