Gryll Grange ... With an introduction by George Saintsbury
An 1896 London and New York reissue of Thomas Love Peacock's last novel, Gryll Grange (1860), introduced by George Saintsbury and illustrated throughout by Frederick Henry Townsend for late-Victorian readers of reprinted fiction. The forty pen drawings are loose, open line work with captioned dialogue: seated men in frock coats, women in wide crinolines and bonnets, hatched interiors with panelled doors and carved chair backs, useful for figure poses, period costume and sparse cross-hatched shading against white space.
