The Muses of Mayfair. Selections from vers de société of the nineteenth century. (Translations from the French and German. By E. Grey.)
An anthology of nineteenth-century vers de société, edited by H. Cholmondeley Pennell and published in London in 1874 for drawing-room readers of light verse. The plates here come largely from the publisher's advertisement pages, where small wood-engraved caricatures sit beside book notices: top-hatted gentlemen in profile, a bearded giant pinned by a tiny figure, a self-portrait of Thackeray, and sketchy grotesques in outline useful as spot illustrations and text ornaments.
