The Chronicle of Clemendy; or, the history of the IX. Joyous Journeys. In which are contained the ... facetious tales of Master Gervase Perrot ... done into English [or rather, written] by A. Machen

PERROT, Gervase. · 1888 · 16 pictures

Arthur Machen's first book, a 1888 London pastiche of medieval Welsh tale-telling issued under the invented name of Gervase Perrot for a subscription readership of antiquarian gentlemen. The plates are printer's ornaments in imitation Renaissance woodcut: symmetrical cartouches built from strapwork, scrolls, drapery swags and hanging bellflowers around a small frontal human mask, printed in grey-black line on cream, ready to lift as headpieces, tailpieces or frame devices.
