Manuscripts from the Diary of a Physician
A cheap 1844 London reprint of sensational medical tales in the vein of Samuel Warren's physician's diary, issued in double-column numbers for a mass penny-press readership. Wood engravings drop into the text columns: sickbeds and swooning women, arrests by top-hatted constables, arguing men in tailcoats, curtained parlours drawn with heavy hatching and stagey gestures useful as small narrative vignettes.
