The Black Pirate; or, the Phantom Ship. A romance
A sensational nautical romance published in London in 1848 for the cheap popular fiction trade, issued in parts with wood-engraved plates set into the text. The vignettes show pirates in cocked hats and cloaks confronting captives on deck, sailors struggling on rigging-crossed ships, a hooded figure walking on water beside a sail, and small groups under trees, all drawn in coarse black line with oval or open-edged borders that sit well as spot art.
