Alexander Pope's collected Works in two volumes, printed by William Bowyer for the London booksellers Jacob Tonson and Bernard Lintot in 1717 for subscribers to English poetry. The plates here are small woodcut factotum initials: square frames of scrolling acanthus, fruit baskets, facing birds and winged putti around a blank centre panel holding a single letter, reusable as drop-cap borders.
