The Great Hall, Winchester Castle
A local antiquarian history of the Great Hall at Winchester Castle, written by Melville Portal and printed by Warren & Son at Winchester in 1899 for county readers and students of the building's records. The illustrations are pen-and-ink drawings of coats of arms, each shield topped by a coronet and filled with hatched or plain fields bearing lions, swords, fish, stars, interlaced knots and wavy bars, giving designers a clean stock of small heraldic devices and repeatable charge motifs.
