Legends and Lyrics ... Fourth edition
An illustrated fourth edition of Adelaide Anne Procter's Legends and Lyrics, published in London in 1866 for Victorian parlour readers, with plates drawn by John Tenniel, Samuel Palmer, W. T. C. Dobson and other hands. The full-page wood engravings carry one-word captions and range from robed angels massed in cloud to wounded figures heaped by a night fire, children in a bare spring hedgerow, and crinolined women in panelled rooms; the dense cross-hatching gives reusable cloud banks, drapery folds and leaf-litter textures.
