Agnes; or Beauty and Pleasure

Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur) · 1857 · 52 pictures

A sensation novel by G. W. M. Reynolds, issued in London in 1857 for the cheap serial market that carried his stories to a mass working-class readership. The wood engravings sit at the head of double-column text pages and stage two or three figures in furnished parlours and bedrooms — crinolined women, whiskered men in frock coats, statuary, gasoliers, mirrors and drapery — giving designers period dress, mid-Victorian interior fittings, and compact narrative groupings.
