The Mysteries of the Court of London ... With ... illustrations
A serialised sensation novel by George W. M. Reynolds, issued in London by John Dicks from 1849 for a mass penny-fiction readership. The wood engravings stage melodramatic two- and three-figure encounters in drawing rooms and bedchambers: kneeling suitors, women in flounced crinolines and bonnets, draped curtains, statuary, vases and mirrors, with caption lines of dialogue set beneath the block for use as period figure cut-outs or interior props.
