The Mysteries of the Court of London ... With ... illustrations
A serialised sensation novel by George W. M. Reynolds, issued in penny parts by John Dicks in London from 1849 for a mass working-class readership. The wood engravings are half-page scenes of drawing rooms, staircases and gardens, with men in tailcoats and women in wide-skirted gowns caught mid-argument, mid-embrace or mid-eavesdrop; useful for period costume silhouettes, interior furnishings and staged two- and three-figure groupings.
