The Mysteries of the Court of London ... With ... illustrations
A serialised sensation novel by George W. M. Reynolds, issued in penny numbers by John Dicks in London from 1849 for a mass working-class readership. Wood-engraved half-page scenes drop figures into drawing rooms and bedchambers: men kneeling before seated women, groups in crinolines and frock coats, curtained windows, ottomans, statuary and mantel clocks, all in open line suited to cutting out figures or borrowing period interiors.
