Inside Out Library

Hindostan; its landscapes, palaces, temples, tombs; the shores of the Red Sea; and the ... scenery of the Himalaya Mountains, illustrated in a series of views. With descriptions by E. Roberts

ROBERTS, Emma. · 1850 · 100 pictures

A British topographical view-book of 1850, with descriptive letterpress by Emma Roberts, surveying Indian landscape, palaces, temples and tombs, the Red Sea coast and the Himalaya, issued in London for armchair travellers and readers with colonial interests. The plates are fine steel engravings printed landscape-format on the page, with soft graded skies, hazy distant hills, dark foreground trees and small figures, elephants and boats set against domed and columned buildings; useful for tonal skies, silhouetted foliage repoussoir and architectural profiles.
