John Roby's Traditions of Lancashire, issued in a fourth edition in 1879, collects county legends and historical anecdotes for Victorian readers with antiquarian and local-history interests. The 22 steel-engraved plates are wide landscape views of halls seen across parkland, church exteriors and gatehouses with small figures and cattle, useful for silhouetted tree masses, soft graded skies and engraved architectural elevations.
