Inside Out Library

The Continental Tourist. Views of Cities and Scenery in Italy, France, and Switzerland. From original drawings by S. Prout, ... and J. D. Harding, with descriptions in English by T. Roscoe, and in French by A. Sosson

Harding, James Duffield, Prout, Samuel, SOSSON, Alexandre., Roscoe, Thomas. · 1849 · 132 pictures

A bilingual picture-book of Continental views engraved after drawings by Samuel Prout and James Duffield Harding, published in 1849 with descriptions in English by Thomas Roscoe and in French by Alexandre Sosson, for tourists and armchair travellers of Italy, France and Switzerland. The 132 steel-engraved plates are wide landscape compositions: lakes and mountain valleys under pale open skies, castles, palaces and hillside villages, with framing trees and small groups of figures and animals staged in the foreground, useful for fine-line tonal scenery, architectural silhouettes and travel-scene vignettes.
