Wanderings and Excursions in North Wales, with 51 engravings, by Radclyffe, from drawings by Cattermole, Cox, etc
Thomas Roscoe's topographical travel account of North Wales, published in London in 1853 for tourists and armchair travellers, with 51 steel engravings by William Radclyffe after drawings by George Cattermole, David Cox and others. The plates are grey tonal landscapes—Bala Lake, Tal-y-llyn, Betws-y-coed—built from dark foreground rock and overhanging branches, mid-ground water or cottages, and pale receding mountains, giving designers ready-made repoussoir framing, graded aerial perspective and small staffage figures for scale.
