Beautiful Joe: the autobiography of a dog ... New edition
Marshall Saunders's Beautiful Joe, a dog-narrated animal-welfare story for young readers, issued in this new English edition by Jarrold & Sons in 1894. The seven plates mix soft-focus halftone photographs of dogs posed on draped tables, begging for a ball, or lying with a child against plain grey studio backdrops with wood-engraved scenes such as a spaniel over a nest of eggs, all captioned with quoted dialogue and page numbers.
