Sketches of Japanese Manners and Customs ... Illustrated by native drawings, reproduced in fac-simile by means of chromo-lithography
J. M. W. Silver's account of Japanese life, published in London by Day & Son in 1867 for British readers following the opening of Japan, with plates copied from Japanese drawings and reproduced by chromolithography. Full-page colour scenes show funerals, cremation, festivals and street trades under tent awnings in flat blocks of green, blue and vermilion, while smaller uncoloured line cuts isolate single figures at work or drunk, usable as spot illustrations or silhouettes.
