A round-the-world travel narrative published in London in 1874 by William Simpson, the Illustrated London News special artist, recounting Egypt, China, Japan and California for British armchair travellers. The plates are heliotypes and wood engravings reprinted from the newspaper: crowded processions of robed figures, palace gateways, and thinly hatched mountain and lava-bed landscapes with small scattered groups.
