Frank Fairlegh; or scenes from the life of a private pupil. [By F. E. Smedley.] With illustrations ... by G. Cruikshank

SMEDLEY, Francis Edward. · 1850 · 30 pictures

Frank Fairlegh, Francis Edward Smedley's 1850 novel of a young man's schooling and scrapes, issued in London with thirty etched plates by George Cruikshank for a middle-class reading public. The plates put small groups of men and boys in book-lined studies, curtained parlours and wine-party rooms, drawn in fine line with hatched shadow; useful for early Victorian dress, caricatured faces and crowded interior staging.
