Harry Coverdale's Courtship, and all that came of it. ... With illustrations by Phiz
A three-volume English comic novel of sporting and domestic life by Francis Edward Smedley, published in London in 1854 for the circulating-library readers who followed serialised Victorian fiction, with 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). The etchings are loose, grey-toned vignettes with unruled edges and engraved script captions, showing crowded racecourse and ballroom throngs, riders at hedges and gates, parlour confrontations and figures scrambling in woodland; useful for hatched crowd silhouettes, horse-and-fence poses and copperplate caption lettering.
