Lewis Arundel; or the Railroad of Life ... With illustrations by Phiz [i.e. H. K. Browne
A three-volume Victorian novel of gentry life and schooling by Francis Edward Smedley, issued in London in 1852 for the circulating-library readership, with 44 etched plates by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). The plates are narrow etchings of grouped figures — drawing-room gatherings, crowded taproom brawls, coach and schoolroom scenes — built from fine hatching with pale, thinly bitten backgrounds and handwritten captions below the image.
