The Struggles and Adventures of Christopher Tadpole at home and abroad. Illustrated by Leech
A comic picaresque novel by Albert Richard Smith, published in London in 1848 for a middle-class serial-reading public, with plates etched by John Leech of Punch. The illustrations are vignetted etchings with soft, cloud-shaped edges and fine crosshatched shading, showing crowded tavern parlours, shop interiors and village rooms full of gesturing figures in 1840s dress — useful for period costume, interior clutter and irregular frame shapes that dissolve into the page.
