The Struggles and Adventures of Christopher Tadpole at home and abroad. Illustrated by Leech
A comic picaresque novel by Albert Richard Smith, first serialised in the 1840s and reissued by R. E. King in London in 1893, with steel-etched plates by John Leech for a general British reading public. The plates are crowded interior scenes rendered in fine hatching, showing cluttered workshops, parlours and tailors' shops, top-hatted men brawling or lounging, women in wide skirts, and stray dogs, with engraved caption lines below oval or vignetted frames.
