Gipsy Life: being an account of our gipsies and their children, with suggestions for their improvement. [With illustrations
George Smith of Coalville's 1880 social survey of English Gypsies, published in London by Haughton & Co. to argue for schooling and legal regulation of travelling families. Wood-engraved plates show crowded tent interiors, roadside encampments, caravans and ragged children, drawn in dense cross-hatching with strong tonal contrast; useful for figure groups, canvas and wagon forms, and camp-fire light.
