Stanley's Wife. A novel
A Victorian three-volume novel by Michael Edward Smith, published in London in 1879 for the circulating-library readership. The two images are small wood-engraved vignettes used as chapter ornaments: a footed urn heaped with grapes, pears and leaves, and a scalloped valance panel with scrolled strapwork and five-petalled rosettes, both usable as printer's tailpieces, borders or spot motifs.
