A technical drawing manual by Richard Somers Smith, enlarged by C. McMillan and published by J. Wiley & Sons in 1885, teaching topographical draughtsmanship to engineering and military students. The numbered plates are fine line engravings of construction geometry, contoured hills in concentric ovals, cones and cylinders ruled with hatching, and graded scales of shade running from white to solid black, useful as ready-made gradient bars, measuring rules and abstract linear diagrams.
