The wood engravings stage medieval court and battlefield episodes — a crowned emperor receiving envoys, Charlemagne enthroned in his tomb, a papal coronation, a shouting throng of armored men — many set inside arched or ribbon-scrolled frames useful as ready-made vignette borders.
