Stanley in Afrika's donkere wildernissen, etc. [Translated from “In Darkest Afrika” by H. Tiedeman
A Dutch translation by H. Tiedeman of Henry Morton Stanley's 1890 account of the Emin Pasha relief expedition, issued for general readers in the Netherlands at the height of European interest in central Africa. The 174 wood-engraved plates and text cuts show canoe convoys on rivers, forest marches under tall trees, armed skirmishes, camps and portrait heads, giving designers dense crosshatched foliage, silhouetted figure crowds and long horizontal river compositions.
