A volume from Georg Steinhausen's series of German cultural-history monographs, published in Leipzig in 1899 for educated general readers, illustrating village and household life with reproductions of sixteenth-century woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham, Hans Weiditz and others. The plates show crowded peasant festivals, pole-climbing and horse races, murders and armed skirmishes, and narrow horizontal friezes of seasonal labour, all in hard black line with repeating leaf-and-lozenge running borders along the page tops.
