An 1857 London edition of Laurence Sterne's 1768 travel novel A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, edited by Edward Litt Leman Blanchard and illustrated by the French wood-engraver Tony Johannot for Victorian general readers. The plates run to ornamental headpieces and tailpieces built from rococo scrollwork, flower garlands, birds on trellises and winged putti beneath console tables piled with books and instruments, giving designers ready-made symmetrical frames, borders and small decorative fillers.
