Sketches of Russia, illustrated with fifteen engravings
Pavel Petrovich Svinin's 1814 travel account of Russia, issued in English with fifteen hand-coloured aquatint plates of St Petersburg and Moscow for British readers curious about the empire. The plates are small framed landscape views, printed sideways on the page, showing colonnaded riverfront palaces, onion domes and spires, boats and tiny figures under broad washed skies with streaked cloud — useful for pale sky gradients, domed skyline silhouettes and plate borders with engraved credit lines.
