Voyage aux Pyrénées ... Troisième édition illustrée par Gustave Doré
Hippolyte Taine's account of travel in the Pyrenees, issued in a third edition at Paris in 1860 with wood-engraved illustrations by Gustave Doré, aimed at French readers following the spa and mountain routes. The plates alternate between wide, low horizontal landscape strips of wooded plains and ranked peaks, rendered in fine open line, and darker figure scenes of pilgrims, beggars, guides and crowds on rocky ground; useful for panorama bands, crowd silhouettes and small vignette spot drawings.
